A high-bay fixture can look painfully bright from underneath and still leave rack faces gloomy. Wattage and lumens alone are poor shortcuts for designing a warehouse.

When talking to an LED high bay light manufacturer, give them the building before you ask for the fixture: mounting height, aisle width, rack height, ceiling temperature and the lux level needed at the working plane.

Walk the aisles, not just the centre line

SYH Ledray supplies commercial and industrial LED lighting and states efficacy figures up to 190 lm/W across its product offering. That is useful for energy calculations, but distribution decides where those lumens land.

A narrow optic can work well from a high mounting point and create ugly bright spots in a lower space. A wide optic can improve uniformity but waste light above the racks if the aisle is narrow.

Ask for a photometric layout using the actual fixture file. Then look at minimum and average illuminance, not only the brightest point.

Glare is another floor-level issue. Forklift drivers and pickers look upward repeatedly. A small, intense source placed directly in their normal sightline can be uncomfortable even if the average lux result is excellent.

Heat and access belong in the purchasing discussion

For a warehouse project, I would still ask what ambient temperature the driver is rated for. Hot air collects near a high ceiling, especially in non-air-conditioned industrial buildings. A fixture that runs comfortably at room temperature may see a very different environment 12 metres above the floor.

Maintenance access matters too. If a failed driver requires a scissor lift and a production shutdown, serviceability has a real cost. Ask whether drivers, surge devices and mounting hardware can be changed without replacing the complete fitting.

Include the people who work under the trial fixtures in the review. Ask them to read a familiar rack label and describe any difficult sightlines during normal tasks. Record where they were standing and which fittings were on. Those observations make the trial easier to discuss with the lighting designer than a general comment that the new lights seem bright.

Before approving a full project, hang a small group of fixtures at the actual height and measure the floor and rack faces after dark. It takes more effort than comparing catalogues, but it catches beam, glare and colour issues while they are still cheap to fix.
