Scrap metal imports to Turkey increased in June 2026, despite a sharp reduction in the supply of raw materials from the United States, increasing by 3.1% in the first half of the year.

According to data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in June of this year, the volume of scrap metal imports to Turkey increased by 31.3% year-on-year and by 7.1% month-on-month to 1.59 million tons. The volume of these imports amounted to $657.72 million, an increase of 44.6% year-on-year and 10.8% month-on-month.

In the first six months of this year, scrap metal imports to Turkey totaled 9.67 million tons, an increase of 3.1 percent, while the value of these imports increased by 5.8 percent to $3.76 billion year-on-year.

The largest supplier of scrap in June was Belgium with shipments of 197,991 thousand tons, which is 150.5% more than in the same period last year, followed by the United Kingdom with shipments of 175,418 thousand tons, which is 624.9% more, and in Russia - 171,278 tons, which is 115.2% more. Romania also recorded a significant increase of 88.6% to 119,324 tons, while Denmark almost doubled its shipments to 78,618 tons. In contrast, imports from the United States increased, despite the fact that the country remained the largest supplier in the period from January to June, the volume of scrap metal imports to Turkey in June sharply decreased by 70.3% year-on-year to 114,659 tons.

Overall, the June data show that the monthly increase in scrap metal imports to Turkey was mainly due to increased purchases from European suppliers and Russia, while a sharp decline in supplies of American-origin raw materials limited this growth. The increase in production volumes in June also contributed to an increase in scrap metal imports to Turkey in the first half of the year to 9.67 million tons, which is 3.1% more than in the same period last year.
