New Zealand Steel, a subsidiary of Australian steel manufacturer BlueScope, has announced the start of industrial steel production in its new electric arc furnace (EDP) at the Glenbrook steel mill, located about 60 km south of Auckland, marking an important milestone in the decarbonization of the New Zealand steel industry.
The new EDP uses renewable electricity and locally produced steel scrap, which allows New Zealand Steel to significantly reduce the carbon intensity of its production. According to the company, the transition will reduce Glenbrook Steel's annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 45 percent, helping to ensure the long-term future of the domestic steel industry.
