Brazilian mining company Vale has signed a strategic partnership with Swiss technology supplier ABB to expand automation, artificial intelligence, and integrated IT/OT solutions at its iron ore processing plants in Brazil to enhance safety, productivity, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
The partnership is based on the cooperation of the companies at the Vale Conceicana II plant with a capacity of 11.2 million tons per year in Minas Gerais. Since the introduction of advanced digital technologies in 2024, the plant's productivity has increased by 25 percent, and the volume of production of high-quality direct-processed iron ore has increased by 40 percent, and the loss of iron in tailings has decreased by 26 percent.
Vale plans to use Conceição II as the basis for the gradual implementation of these technologies in other Brazilian iron ore plants, enhancing technological capabilities, predictability and product quality while reducing manual intervention and employee exposure to hazardous activities.
