The American corporation Nucor announced on August 13 that it will invest $59 million to expand its Vulcraft Indiana manufacturing facility in St. Joe, Indiana, adding steel grating manufacturing capabilities. The investment is expected to create 20 new full-time jobs at the facility, which currently employs more than 300 people.
According to Indiana Governor Mike Brown's office, which announced the project on the same day, Vulcraft will build and equip a new 127,000-square-foot facility on its 250-acre site in St. Joe, with work scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, and new jobs will be filled by the end of 2027. an average salary exceeding 150 percent of the Dekalb County average.
The added floor space will make Vulcraft in Indiana one of four Vulcraft steel grating plants, along with two plants in Canada and another in the United States.The product is used to make industrial floor coverings and stairs.
The factory is already producing steel floor beams and steel flooring.
John Hollatz, executive vice president of finished building products, said the investment will allow the company to "better serve customers and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities in the recycling industry," advancing a corporate strategy that Nucor describes as "Core Development and expansion Beyond." In 1962, Nucor acquired Vulcraft, marking its entry into the steel industry, and in 1972, the fifth Vulcraft plant was opened in Indiana. It is currently one of nine Vulcraft enterprises in North America.
Vulcraft is the largest manufacturer of open-bed steel beams, floor crossbars and steel decking in the United States, which are used primarily in non-residential construction, including warehouses, data centers, manufacturing plants, retail outlets squares, schools and hospitals, and the annual capacity of the plant for the production of beams and decking is about 1.2 million tons. This announcement marks Nucor's fourth major investment in Indiana in recent years. After the $290 million upgrade of the Crawfordsville sheet-rolling mill, which was announced in 2022, the construction of a $115 million utility infrastructure facility was announced. The following year, a $28.5 million insulated metal panel manufacturing plant was built in Waterloo, which began commissioning in 2021. Collectively, these projects will create approximately 300 new jobs, and Nucor currently employs more than 2,600 people in more than a dozen branches across the state.
