Canadian company MetalQuest Mining Inc. has completed the second mining and core extraction program at its Lac Otelnuk iron ore project in northern Quebec, launching comprehensive metallurgical tests aimed at producing direct reduction pellets.
COREM is embarking on a 26-week testing program
The company has delivered about 550 kg of typical historical drilling core material to Quebec-based mineral processing. COREM is officially initiating a 26-week program that includes sample characterization, pilot processing, flotation optimization, pelletizing, and advanced metallurgical testing.
During the work, the technological scheme of enrichment will be evaluated, which makes it possible to obtain high-quality iron ore concentrate with a given silica content below 1.5-2.0%, which contributes to the potential production of granules suitable for direct reduction and use in electric arc steel smelting plants in furnaces.
Historical reserves amount to about five billion tons
According to the 2015 feasibility study of the project, Lac Otelnuk's historical proven reserves amount to 4.94 billion tons, which is 28.7% of the total amount of iron, and the historical probable reserves of 50 million tons of ore account for 27.5% of iron. The total historical proven and probable reserves of the project amount to 4.99 billion tons with an average iron content of 28.7 percent.
However, MetalQuest does not consider these figures to be current mineral reserves, as a qualified specialist has not performed sufficient verification work. According to the company's project review, Lac Otelnuk also has historical estimated and confirmed mineral reserves of 20.64 billion tons and estimated resources of 6.84 billion tons.

Metallurgical program This is part of MetalQuest's efforts to modernize Lac Otelnuk following an analysis of technical deficiencies conducted by AtkinsRéalis in December 2025. Located approximately 165 km northwest of Shefferville, the project is currently preparing an updated feasibility study.
