As part of a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, India's Tata Steel Limited has commissioned a coke oven gas supply system at its plant in Meramandali in the eastern state of Odisha, the company said in a statement on Friday, September 11.
"This initiative aims to maximize the use of gases to reduce dependence on external fossil fuel sources. We remain focused on demonstrating and scaling low-carbon technologies, so we accelerate our goal of achieving zero emissions by 2045," the statement said..
In metallurgical plants, coke oven gas, a byproduct rich in hydrogen and hydrocarbons, is usually used to generate electricity, heat, or simply burn in torches.
With the support of technology partner Paul Wurth-SMS and equipment supplier Kobelco, Tata Steel has successfully implemented a coke oven gas supply system, replacing the use of fossil fuels as a reducing agent, thereby reducing the environmental impact, the company said.
In addition to reducing fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, it also provides a unique opportunity to use a blast furnace with a three-fuel system, increasing operational flexibility and efficiency, the report says.
