Brazil had used an average of 70% of its steel import quotas by October 7, up from 60% on September 23, the foreign trade system Siscomex reported. The quotas allow a total of 394,657 metric tons of steel products to be imported at tariffs of 9% to 16%; volumes above the limit face a 25% duty.
Approved on June 26, the quotas run through October 2026. The previous round, which expired in June, covered 445,469 metric tons. The current limits apply to plates in coils, hot- and cold-rolled coil, zinc-coated steel, Galvalume and wire rod.
Zinc-coated steel had the highest quota utilization, at 85% of 144,286 metric tons, followed by cold-rolled coil at 77% of 54,376 metric tons. Utilization stood at 67% for Galvalume, out of 147,038 metric tons; 34% for plates in coils, out of 899 metric tons; and 23% for hot-rolled coil, out of 25,284 metric tons. The wire rod quota was 5% used, out of 22,774 metric tons.
