Frequency converter is a device that controls an alternating current motor - synchronous and asynchronous. Basic engineering knowledge is required to set it up.
Converters are available with scalar or vector control. Scalar control is the simplest of all. Its essence is to maintain the constancy of the ratio of voltage and frequency (only these values are controlled). A frequency inverter with vector control operates so that the torque is unchanged in relation to the load torque throughout the entire speed control range (during operation of the inverter, voltage, frequency and current are monitored).
Frequency converters are used in various industries for:
• energy savings in ventilation systems, blowers, heat and water supply (from 25 to 50%;
• expanding the capabilities of the equipment:
a) speed regulation;
c) synchronous control of several motors from 1 converter;
• replacement of the DC drive (reducing operating costs, etc.).
The price of this device depends on the manufacturer, type of control, model and other factors.
A frequency converter is needed if you plan to carry out repair work, with its help you can save electricity, as well as reduce the noise level when the motors are running, peak loads on the power grid are reduced to nothing. In addition, it helps to protect the motor from short circuits arising from voltage surges, overheating and overloads, control the engine speed, etc.
