The universal production of steel in 2012 reached 1 billion 548 million tons, increasing by 1.2% compared to 2011. This indicator has become a new world record, according to the World Association of manufacturers of WSA.
Asia and North America became the main sources of production growth, while in the Eurozone and South America there was a decline. In 2012, 1 billion 12 million 700 thousand tons of steel were melted, which is 2.6% more than in 2011. The regional share of the Asian region increased to 65.4% in 2012, against 64.5% in 2011.
The European Union reduced the production of steel by 4.7% in 2012 - up to 169 million 400 thousand tons. Germany produced 42 million 700 thousand tons of unrefined steel in 2012, (-3.7% by 2011). Italy smelted 27 million 200 thousand tons in 2012 (-5.2% to 2011). The production of steel in France in 2012 amounted to 15 million 600 thousand tons (-1.1% by 2011). Spain was melted 13 million 600 thousand tons of damp steel in 2012 (-12.1% by 2011).
The production of steel in North America amounted to 121 million 900 thousand tons, which is 2.5% more than in 2011. The United States smelted 88 million 600 thousand tons of steel ( +2.5% by 2011).
Russia also increased the production of steel in 2012 by 2.5%, reaching an indicator of 68 million 900 thousand tons.
Ukraine turned out to be a world leader in the decline in production in 2012, lowering the smelting of steel by 6.9% to 32 million 900 thousand tons. However, this did not prevent Ukrainian metallurgists from staying in the top ten leaders of the world production of steel.
An annual production of steel in South America decreased by 3.0% falling to 46 million 900 thousand tons in 2012. Brazil lost 1.5% of the annual smelting of steel with a result of 34 million 700 thousand tons.
This is what the first dozen countries of world leaders of production of steel likes:
1 China 716.5 million tons +3.1%
2 Japan 107.2 million tons -0.3%
3 United States 88.6 million tons +2.5%
4 India 76.7 million tons +4.3%
5 Russia 70.6 million tons +2.5%
6 South Korea 69.3 million tons +1.2%
7 Germany 42.7 million tons -3.7%
8 Türkiye 35.9 million tons +5.2%
9 Brazil 34.7 million tons -1.5%
10 Ukraine 32.9 million tons -6.9%
The coefficient of use of production capacities for the production of steel in 2012 fell to 78.8% compared with 80.7% in 2011.

The World Steel Management Association - World Steel Association (WorldSteel) is the largest and most dynamically developing industrial association in the world. WorldSteel represents about 170 steel manufacturers (including 16 out of the 20 largest metallurgical companies in the world), national and regional associations of metallurgical industry and research institutes. The share of the production countries of the WorldSteel members is about 85% of world production
