Dr. Erdem Şireli, Secretary General of the Turkish Stainless Steel Association (PASSAD), assessed the expectations for 2026 and strategic priorities related to the protection of domestic production in the Turkish stainless steel industry, which has reached an estimated size of about $5 billion. Highlighting the critical role of stainless steel in the industry, Mr. Şireli emphasized the importance of government-backed protection mechanisms for the sustainability of new investments and employment.
Stating that the industry, in whose competitiveness has weakened in recent years due to the rise of dumped imports, expects rules to strengthen the domestic industry to be implemented without delay in 2026, Mr. Shireli noted that stainless steel continues to be a strategic resource for many industries, ranging from defense and automotive to kitchenware, energy and healthcare.
Dumping pressure imports
He pointed out that low-cost products originating from the Far East and Asia have disrupted market balances by entering the domestic market, negatively impacting the production and investment decisions of local producers. Noting that increasing pressure on imports and price-cutting practices are creating unfair competition, the Secretary-General said that strategic safeguards, including anti-dumping duties, will be critical to the recovery of the sector.
