The Belgian company ArcelorMittal announced that, in cooperation with state investor FINEG, it has commissioned a new gas recovery turbine (TRT) at its steel plant in Ghent to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The official commissioning took place on September 30, the turbine has a capacity of 6 MW and uses blast furnace gas pressure to generate electricity. The plant is expected to generate between 45,000 MWh and 50,000 MWh of electricity per year, equivalent to an average consumption of approximately 12,500 to 14,000 households.
According to the company, self-generated electricity will reduce its need for energy from external sources and avoid annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 9,800 million tons. The technology is also compatible with future carbon dioxide capture and storage from blast furnace газа.
The investment supports the strategy of climate neutrality until 2050 года
The investment is part of ArcelorMittal Belgium's strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, which aims to increase energy efficiency, electrification and the introduction of a "smart carbon approach" based on the use of waste as raw materials.
ArcelorMittal Belgium currently has 87 MW of renewable energy production capacity through 100,000 square meters of solar panels and 17 wind turbines. As part of the electrification strategy, the company also ordered a 380 kV high-voltage connection from the Belgian transmission system operator Elia in December 2025.
