The most powerful tropical cyclone, which fell on Monday on Australia, has reached the fourth category of danger today as a hurricane, as was predicted by weather forecasters. The epicenter of the hurricane is now 130 km northeast of the Pilbar port, where the wind speed reaches 165 km/h. This was reported by the Australian Meteorological Bureau.
In addition to Pilbar, the storm also affected the port of Hedland, which is one of the transshipment points in the supply of iron ore from Australia. Hedland residents are evacuated.
The export of iron ore from the Australian enterprises BHP Billiton Ltd, Fortescue Metals Group LTD and Atlas Iron LTD Port Hedland, as well as Rio Tinto Group, has been stopped from Monday. Thus, more than 50 percent of the mined raw materials do not enter the world market.
According to analysts, in March 2013, the supply of iron ore to world markets will be reduced by 5% due to a hurricane to grow. “We expect some damage to the facilities of mining enterprises, in connection with this, the resumption of their activities can be delayed for several days,” said Melinda Moore Executive Director at Standard Bank PLC.
