The Design Institute of the Russian steel company Severstal-Project has developed a three-dimensional digital model for the modernization of a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine (CherMK), which will allow the company to eliminate potential spatial conflicts, optimize internal logistics and reduce equipment installation time by almost half.
The upgraded line, located next to the existing equipment in Coating shop No. 1, will have an annual capacity of 460,000 tons and will process rolled products from 0.4mm to 4 mm thick with zinc, zinc-aluminum and aluminum-silicon coatings according to customer requirements.
Using 3D laser scanning, Severstal-Project created a single digital model of the foundations of a line with a length of more than 200 meters, metal structures, pipelines and electrical networks, as well as planned the installation of equipment, transportation of heavy components, lifting zones, personnel access routes, as well as the dismantling and replacement of existing foundations.
Currently, the model is used to coordinate the activities of the general contractor, Severstal Domnaremont Center LLC, and more than 15 subcontractors. Severstal said that about 80 percent of its projects are currently being implemented using building information modeling technologies.
