The National Development and Reform Commission of China (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration recently published the 15th five-year plan for the construction of a new type of energy system, according to which about 15 new ultra-high-frequency direct current channels with energy transmission from west to east will be put into operation. The transmission power exceeds 420 GW. More than six regional energy system interconnection projects will be completed, which will strengthen mutual support. The capacity of the networks will increase by about 40 GW. In addition, the digital and intelligent modernization of distribution networks will be expanded, the development of intelligent microgrids will be accelerated, and the modernization of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) networks will be accelerated. Thanks to these initiatives, investments in the fixed assets of the national energy system are expected to exceed 5.0 trillion yuan (0.74 trillion U.S. dollars) during the 15th five-year period, indicating an increase of more than 80 percent compared to the same period of the 14th five-year plan.
Zhang Lin, director of the Planning and Development Department of the Electric Power Council of China, said: "Electric grid complex projects involve large investments, long production chains and strong side effects that will help stabilize economic growth and are the most important foundation for high-quality economic and social development."
