In January-August 2026, the decline in imports of HRC to Turkey slowed to 6.5% amid a recovery in volumes in August.

According to preliminary data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in August of this year, imports of hot rolled steel (HRC) to Turkey amounted to 413,564 metric tons, which is 67.5% more than in July and 42.2% more year-on-year. Meanwhile, the value of these imports amounted to 242.59 million dollars, an increase of 67.4 percent compared to the previous month and 58.6 percent year-on-year.

In January-August, during the reporting period, imports of hot-rolled products to Turkey amounted to 2.39 million tons, a decrease of 6.5%, while the value of these imports decreased by five percent to 1.34 billion dollars year-on-year.

During the specified period, China was the largest source of HRC imports to Turkey, which supplied 574,417 tons, which is a decrease of 45.2% compared to the same period last year. China was followed by Russia with 509,247 million tons, which is 14.9% less, and Malaysia with 468,884 tons, which is significantly more than 28,580 tons in the same period last year.

In August, the reduction in imports to Turkey of HRC decreased significantly. In the period from January to July, imports decreased by 12.7% year-on-year, while in January-August the decline decreased to 6.5%, and the total volume reached 2.39 million tons. This reflected strong growth in August, when imports rose 42.2% year-on-year and 67.5% month-on-month to 413,564 tons.

The supplier rating has also changed in accordance with the August data. China overtook Russia and became the largest supplier of HRC to Turkey in January-August, despite a decrease in total shipments by 45.2% year-on-year. Shipments from China in August increased by 11.9% year-on-year to 148,741 thousand tons, while shipments from Russia fell by 58.6% to 34,625 thousand tons.

Malaysia's share in the supply structure continued to increase from January to August, imports rose to 468,884 tons from 28,580 tons a year earlier, and shipments in August increased by 348.2 percent year-on-year. Imports from Japan also increased by 64.1 percent during this period, while purchases from Egypt and South Korea remained below last year's levels. In general, the August data indicate a significant monthly recovery and further reorientation of Turkish HRC suppliers to China, Malaysia and Japan.
