The Austrian steel company Voestalpine has announced the commissioning of a new power unit at its plant in Linz as part of the greentec steel decarburization program, which prepares enterprises for the transition to electric arc furnace (EDP) steel production in Austria. 2027.
The new power unit, which was completed and handed over in the summer of 2026, will allow the company to generate electricity using steam generated during cooling processes of its new ДСП.
A new division to compensate for the decrease in blast furnace gas in наличии
Currently, the company relies on generators powered by blast furnace gas in the territory of electricity production. However, when the new EDP replaces blast furnace No. 5 in 2027, the availability of blast furnace gas will decrease. The new power unit of the power plant compensates for this change by using steam generated by the EDP to produce electricity.
The facility is currently undergoing commissioning, including final operational tests, ahead of the planned launch of the EDP. According to Voestalpine, the new power unit of the power plant is now ready for the transition of the steel mill to hybrid production using both EDP and blast furnaces.
