Norway to start reusing steel from decommissioned ships to reduce emissions from construction

Norway to start reusing steel from decommissioned ships to reduce emissions from construction

Norwegian government agency Enova has announced that it will provide up to 244 million Norwegian kroner ($25.54 million) in financing to Nordic Circles and Alsaker Stål for a project aimed at reusing steel from decommissioned ships in new buildings, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with building construction by 25 percent.

Funding, subject to the continuation of the project, will be directed towards creating a closed steel production and distribution chain in Norway, including the collection, purification, quality control and re-certification of steel from decommissioned vessels for use in construction.

Artificial intelligence and automation to support competitive reuse стали

The project builds on previous pilot initiatives supported by the Norwegian Research Council, Siva and Innovation Norway, which demonstrated the feasibility of using reconstituted marine steel in construction. One example is an eight-storey office building in Bergen.

According to Enova, the project will use artificial intelligence-based planning tools, automation, and new steel cutting and cleaning technologies to increase efficiency and make reusable marine steel competitive in the market compared to newly manufactured steel. The initiative also involves investments of up to NOK 520 million ($54.44 million) from Alsaker Stål, a member of Tertnes Holding in collaboration with Nordic Circles and Enova.

Reuse of marine steel in Europe can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 17 million tons per year год

Enova said steel production could account for up to 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions related to construction. buildings. The reuse of existing steel components would eliminate almost all the emissions associated with the production of an equivalent amount of new steel. Approximately 10 million tons of steel are scrapped annually from European ships, with the majority of ships being dismantled in Asia. Thus, the extraction and reuse of this material in Europe can create new industrial opportunities while reducing demand for new steel..

Enova estimates that the reuse of all steel obtained from decommissioned European ships in new buildings can reduce emissions associated with steel production in Europe by up to 17 million tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to more than a third of Norway's annual greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of the project is to create a commercially viable model for the reuse of marine steel, which could be extended to Norway and other European markets.
