The Dunkirk EDP project provides for investments of 300 million euros
. Investments in Dunkirk include the construction of an electric arc furnace with a capacity of 2 million tons per year and a ladle furnace. Preparatory work is currently underway, and 300 million euros have already been allocated for the preparation of the site and the purchase of equipment with a long service life.
It is expected that when using secondary raw materials, hot briquetting or direct reduction cast iron, as well as cast iron at the new production site, emissions will amount to about 0.6 million tons of co₂ per ton of steel, which is about two-thirds lower than that of a blast furnace. Applications for permits have already been submitted, and public consultations are scheduled to begin on October 15.
In the spring of 2027, Mardyck plans to conduct additional line tests.
As SteelOrbis previously reported, the first three electrical steel production lines in Mardyck, employing 200 people, were launched in March. The installation of equipment for the annealing-etching line and the reversing mill is nearing completion, and the first tests are expected in the spring of 2027.
Additional lines will complement the integrated production chain providing electrical steel for engines and generators.
