Severstal has begun installing the main equipment at a power plant that will generate electricity from metallurgical gases at the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK). The project, worth about RUB 13 billion, is expected to boost the mill’s in-house power generation and cut carbon emissions by around 430,000 tonnes a year.
Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev said the plant would be able to meet up to 95% of CherMK’s electricity needs. This will help the company reach its target of reducing emissions by 10% from its baseline by the end of 2030.
The facility will have a 149 MW turbine and a boiler producing 460 tonnes of steam per hour. It is designed to use an additional 2.7 billion cubic metres of blast furnace gas each year to generate about 1.2 billion kWh of electricity.
The main building’s steel framework is complete, and water-treatment and turbine equipment are being installed. The gas pipeline is 90% complete, while the boiler has passed hydraulic testing at 194 atmospheres. Hot testing is scheduled for 2027. The plant will also supply power to new CherMK facilities, including an iron ore pellet complex under construction.
