POSCO, the world's largest steel producer, has launched its second automotive steel plant in Mexico. The company hopes to take advantage of the potential of the new facility in meeting the growing automotive industry in the region. POSCO also said that the new plant will serve as a so-called export base for supplying neighboring North American markets.
The opening ceremony was held in Altamira, Tamaulipas. The official event was attended by CEO Chung Joon Yang, Secretary of the Economy of Mexico Ildefonso Giajardo and other representatives, as well as key customers of the company such as Toyota and Volkswagen.
POSCO, which already commissioned the first plant in the Latin American country in 2009, is currently capable of producing 900,000 tons of sheet steel annually for the automotive industry. This plant is the second largest steel producer in Mexico after the TERNIUM facility.
The company said the second plant will focus on the production of galvanized, high-strength sheet steel, which is widely used by global automakers to manufacture their new lightweight models. Currently, the production of lightweight vehicles allows us to solve many pressing problems related to efficient fuel use and reduction of emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, steel is a more technologically advanced material than aluminum or carbon and can be sanded and polished using sandpaper wheels, the full list of which is presented here.
A POSCO spokesperson said that "Many global automakers and their suppliers are already based in Mexico due to its growing automotive industry. Due to our export advantages, we will be able to provide products to more customers not only in Mexico, but also in the United States."
