Praxair Inc has signed a long-term contract for the supply of industrial gases to a new steel mill that is being built near the port of Pesem in the international free trade Area in the state of Ceara, located in the northeastern region of Brazil. This is reported in tekna.by .
The plant will be operated by a joint venture CSP created by Brazilian Vale and South Korean companies Dongkuk Steel and Posco Steel. Praxair will build and operate a cryogenic plant with a capacity of 2,400 tons per day, which is capable of producing gaseous and liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon. The CSP plant will be able to produce 3 million tons of steel slabs per year, which will largely be exported for further processing by Korean partners.
The plant plans to start operating in 2016. Domingos Bulus, president of Praxair, said that "We are proud to play a significant role in this project. Our cooperation will ensure stable production of high-quality steel." CSP considers Praxair as a reliable local source of high-quality oxygen, crucial for the annual production of 3 million tons of slabs. The partners expressed confidence in their intention to continue developing the first integrated steel mill in northeastern Brazil.
The new Praxair facility will also be able to provide packaged gas to customers in various sectors of the country's economy in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil, including food and beverage manufacturing, metal structures, healthcare and the automotive sector.
