Mechel Announces Successful Trials of New Coal Shipping Terminal

Mechel OAO, one of the leading Russian companies in the mining and metallurgical industry, announces the successful tests of a new terminal for loading coal in the Primorsky Territory in the port of Posiet. This will allow the company to significantly increase its exports to the Asia-Pacific region.

The cost of the project is estimated at a total of 4.5 billion rubles. The first stage of modernization of the Posiet port will increase the cargo turnover to 7 million tons per year. Thanks to the new terminal, the port will be able to unload about 400 wagons per day and load about 30,000 tons of coal per day on cargo ships. The equipment of the coal terminal was manufactured by a German company based on the ThyssenKrupp concern, whose experts are currently conducting commissioning.

The main feature of the complex is more intensive loading while minimizing damage to wagons. The terminal also includes warehouse equipment and in particular the latest tow truck Moscow . The terminal's production line removes foreign matter that can contaminate the coal during transportation. To unload coal in winter, the terminal uses a center with infrared electric heaters. The coal terminal is operated from a single monitoring center.

The modernization of Posiet port will have a positive impact on the ecological situation in Posiet village, as the new complex is equipped with highly efficient dust extraction and dust suppression systems, which provides additional environmental protection. In addition, new jobs have been created in the region.

The new coal terminal should be put into commercial operation in the second quarter of 2014, which will mark the completion of the first stage of the investment project to modernize the port of Posiet. The second stage is planned for the next few years. It includes the construction of a deep-water berth and a canal section for vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 60,000 tons.
