Speaking on Friday at the London School of Economics, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso hastened to reassure residents of foggy Albion about rumors about Ukraine's possible EU membership.
“We do not exclude such a possibility, but Ukraine is not ready to join the European Union. It has to go through political association and economic integration step by step, ”said Barroso.
In addition, the European Union itself is not ready to include Ukraine in the ranks of its members.
“At the moment, from a realistic point of view, we cannot provide the prospect of membership for Ukraine and other countries in the near future,” said the head of the European Commission.
Recall that the reason for the latest protests in Ukraine was the refusal of the Yanukovych-Azarov government to continue the course towards European integration and the failure to sign the Ukraine-EU association agreement in November last year.
Earlier it was reported that the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry Radoslaw Sikorski proposed to supplement the association agreement with a clause on the possibility of Ukraine's joining the EU, but Europe has a negative attitude towards this prospect.
The European Union does not need Ukraine either now or in the future
