Since the former owner of the Serbian plant (American US Steel) has left the company to arbitrariness, all social responsibility for workers has fell on the budget of this country. Legal nuances of the plant’s transfer will necessarily arise, but so far the problems of application contract law in relation to the abandoned enterprise fell on the shoulders of the government. Previously, the plant brought 10% of all currency revenues, and now barely supports the operation of one furnace.
Therefore, on June 11, 2012, the deadline for submitting applications for the privatization of the Zelezara Smederevo plant expires. Belgrade suggested the emergence of Chinese investors, and possibly Western ones. But at the moment, three possible investors acquired tender documentation: the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company Iskander Makhmudov (Russia), United Pilsen S.A, owned by Igor Shamis and Viktor Nusenkis (Ukraine).
According to experts, not all potential investors intend to bring the struggle to the end.
Donetskstal is only interested in part of the Smederevsky complex that produces hot rental, and the preservation of the sales markets in Serbia. The Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company is more involved in the insurance of United Pilsen S.a which is most interested in acquiring the Zelezara Smederevo plant.
