Nordic countries discuss the possibility of building Nord Stream 2

Against the background of the situation in Ukraine and the deteriorating security in the Baltic region, there is a lively discussion in the Nordic countries about Nord Stream 2, according to analysts at the Center for Eastern Studies.

In recent months, there has been a revitalization of discussions on the Nord Stream 2 project in Sweden, Finland and Denmark, through whose territories the planned pipeline will pass. Governments in Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen found themselves in a difficult position to take a stand on the project. On the one hand, these countries do not want to use national legislation and block Nord Stream 2, which is supported by Germany. On the other hand, they are under increasing pressure from the United States and some countries of Central and Eastern Europe, they do not want to become "more dependent on Russian energy."

They are waiting for the European Commission to submit an assessment of compliance with the various regulations for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In addition, Stockholm and Copenhagen prefer to work out a common EU political position, based on an assessment of the project's compliance with the EU energy policy objectives, climatic conditions and EU energy security interests.

According to the plans, Nord Stream 2 will run parallel to the two existing pipelines Nord Stream 1 through the economic zones of Finland - on a section of 375 km, Sweden - 500 km, the economic zone and the Danish sea - a total of 140 km.
