Spanish environmentalists demand the closure of mines

A group of activists "Environmentalists in Action" and other organizations visited the European Parliament in Brussels and demanded the closure of all active mines in Spain.

Supported by MP Xabir Benito, environmentalists organized a conference entitled "Mining in Europe: A New Challenge". At the forum, they said that mining, which they believe has been booming in Spain over the past five years, is putting nature, cities and jobs at risk.

The event was attended by civil society representatives from Cantabria, Aragon, Galicia, Avila, Salamanca, Seville and Ciudad Real. They said their lives were negatively affected by the operations of lithium, tin, lead, tungsten, uranium and copper.

At the meeting, the proponents also addressed issues related to mining in Finland, where mining is booming; France, which is reforming its mining code; and Portugal, the country they say, is threatened by the reopening of old mines and the establishment of new ones.
