EU metallurgists will receive enlarged quotas for the release of CO2

The European Commission considers the possibility of increasing the free number of greenhouse gas emissions in the metallurgical sector in order to prevent the transfer of production facilities from Europe to other countries of the world.

The cost of a ton of CO2 in the EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME - ETS system has collapsed under the weight of an excess supply to a record of 5.61 euros per ton.

However, the expected growth in heavy industry will not lead to a reduction in emissions, but will force manufacturers to transfer their production to countries where it is not necessary to buy quotas to CO2.

"The commission plans to compile a list of industries that are most susceptible to the ETS rules and which, therefore, are at risk of moving their activities outside the European Union," a high -ranking official official of the European Commission told Reuters on Friday.

"The enterprises included in this list will benefit from the temporary abolition of fees for emissions in 2013," a source said that asked to remain an unknown. "Metallurgical enterprises in Europe, most likely, will receive the right to free environmental pollution," he added.

The European Commission has already approved the volume of state subsidies to free emissions of CO2, indicating that this money should be used to modernize the production and infrastructure of enterprises.

The United Research Center for the European Commission considers various scenarios for achieving greater energy efficiency and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases with the European Union with the metallurgical industry.

As part of the basic scenario, it is assumed that while maintaining the current trends, emissions in industry will fall by 14% of the 2010 level until 2030. Medium -term obligations taken by the European Union at the summit in Doha, Qatar, they say about a decrease in 20% of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2020.

The Association of manufacturers of European EUROFER has commented on these agreements as "unattainable for industry and pose a serious danger to the European production base."

The European Commission is studying the issue of increasing the use of renewable energy sources and a significant reduction in emissions by 2030. However, representatives of heavy industry and some states of the European Union, such as Poland, which completely depends on the sales of coal, expressed a categorical protest against tightening control over CO2 emissions.
