Arcelormittal Zenica (Zenitsa, Bosnia) announced the upcoming reduction of more than half the number of employees in the enterprise. Of the 2600 employees of the plant, 1,400 people will be dismissed, since the Bosnian branch of Arcelormittal shows the lowest labor productivity in Europe.
On Thursday, several hundred workers of ArcelorMittal Zenica took to the streets of the city in protest. The leader of the trade union organization, Mr. Zuhdija Kapetanovic, announced the beginning of preventive daily hourly strikes, which will continue until the plan of dismissal is withdrawn.
"An increase in labor productivity at the enterprise should not occur at the expense of workers," the leader of the trade unions emphasized. The leadership of Arcelormittal Zenica did not react to protests and statements of trade unions, but its general director Mr. Mukund Kulkarni said that "if the plant wants to remain competitive and survive in these difficult times, it is crucial for this is an increase in labor productivity."
