Many European countries have tried to reduce their dependence on natural gas and oil exports from Russia. However, this forced these countries to increase the use of coal for electricity generation.
The Netherlands planned to remove restrictions on electricity generation from coal and other fossil fuels. The limit was one third of the country's total electricity generation. In addition, some other European countries, including Germany and Austria, have also lifted the restriction on the production of coal-fired power plants to provide energy.
In fact, in order to cut carbon emissions, the EU has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. The resumption of the use of coal for electricity generation could slow down the energy transition.
