Which generator to choose: gasoline or diesel?

Какой генератор выбрать: бензиновый или дизельный?

There are two main types of power generators - gasoline and diesel. There are also gas ones, but they are quite rare in the private consumption segment of our country. Choosing a generator is not so easy - each model is characterized by a large number of parameters. The first thing a potential buyer pays attention to is power. Of course, this is one of the most important parameters, however, in addition to power, the expected loads should be taken into account, as well as the peculiarities of the operation of a particular type of engine.

How much power is needed?

In order to understand what the maximum power of the generator may be required, it is necessary to calculate the total power of the connected devices, and add 30% of the obtained value to take into account the high starting currents. Gas generators are relatively low-power devices designed for small loads. The minimum power is 0.5 kW, the upper limit is limited to 10-12 kW. Generators based on a gasoline engine are sensitive to overloads and cannot work for a long time - the average rate of operation without interruption fluctuates around 8 hours. The power of diesel generators for domestic use starts from 10 kW, for industrial units it can reach up to 200 kW. The diesel engine is contraindicated to work with low loads, which lead to incomplete combustion of diesel fuel. This contributes to the formation of deposits inside the engine, coking of the exhaust system and, as a result, accelerated wear.

Resource, reliability and service

A diesel power plant is capable of operating without shutdown for a long time and has a greater motor resource than a gasoline one. Diesel fuel is both a fuel and a lubricant, which has a very positive effect on the service life of the system. However, a diesel generator is much more complicated and more demanding for maintenance than a gasoline analogue. The gasoline generator is less whimsical to maintenance, it is easier to start at low temperatures. The service life of a gas generator on average reaches 3000 hours for four-stroke engines - an open air-cooled design contributes to this, while the service life of a diesel engine with an air-cooled system is 3000-7000 hours, and the service life of industrial diesel power plants with a liquid cooling system can reach 40 000 hours.

Weight and noise

The weight of gas generators rarely exceeds 100 kg, which makes them quite mobile, convenient for transportation, and temporary work. Average noise level at 72 dB. Diesel generators are characterized by a relatively high weight, which, for the most part, makes them a stationary solution. Of-
