Bearings and industrial components

Подшипники и промышленные комплектующие

Bearings are a movable structure that supports and guides the rotation of the shaft. The movement can be sliding or rotational. The great Leonardo da Vinci used ball bearings in his helicopter project back in 1500. This was the first recorded use of bearings in aerospace construction. The problem with ball and roller bearings is that the balls or rollers rub against each other, causing additional friction, which can be reduced by enclosing the balls or rollers in a housing. A registered patent for such a bearing was granted to Philip Vaughan, a British inventor in 1794.

Industrial era

Bearings played a key role in the nascent industry, enabling new equipment to operate more efficiently. The first plain and rolling bearings were made of wood, followed by bronze. Throughout its history, bearings have been made from a variety of materials, including ceramics, sapphire, glass, steel, bronze, other metals and plastics, which are used today.

Bearing types

There are at least 6 types of bearings, each of which works according to different principles:

A sleeve bearing consisting of a shaft rotating in a bore.

A rolling bearing in which the rolling elements located between the pivot ring and the stationary ring prevent sliding friction.

A ball bearing in which the rolling elements are spherical balls.

Roller bearing in which the rolling elements are cylindrical rollers.

A sleeve bearing in which one of the bearing surfaces is made of a super-hard vitreous precious material such as sapphire to reduce friction and wear. There are also hydrostatic bearings, which have an oil wedge in the gap between the bushing and the shaft, and magnetic bearings, which use magnetic fields to support the shaft non-contact.

Used bearings, even the ancient Egyptians and, possibly, even before the invention of the wheel. Bearings in the form of tree trunks under the sleigh, on which huge boulders moved, are depicted in the drawings in the tomb of Jehutihotep. These were the first plain bearings. Today bearings are used
