Tesla showed off its Dojo supercomputer and proprietary D1 chip

Tesla показала свой суперкомпьютер Dojo и фирменный чип D1

The Project Dojo supercomputer is Tesla's first attempt at building his own supercomputer. In the course of its creation, new opportunities will be used to modernize the system to improve the performance of electric vehicles.

Tesla's achievements were presented during the AI Day event. Tesla Corporation representatives demonstrated their own D1 chip, which was developed and released by the company's engineers. The chip is required to train artificial intelligence systems in Tesla data centers.

Representatives of the company shared with the general public information about the supercomputer Dojo, which is scheduled for release in the very near future. Additional information released by Tesla representatives related to some hardware.

Artificial Intelligence Training

Tesla's senior director, who develops equipment for electric car autopilots and is responsible for the successful implementation of the Dojo project, said: “The D1 chip is manufactured using a seven-nanometer manufacturing process, it is equipped with 50 billion transistors and can provide 362 teraflops of computational power. An array of 120 clusters, each equipped with 25 of these chips, forms the Dojo supercomputer. ”

Tesla was forced to create its own supercomputer in order to process hundreds of terabytes of information every day. Data is transferred to the company's servers from Tesla electric vehicles ( https://loki-tesla.com/). This information is collected from all over the world and carefully processed to improve and train artificial intelligence. At the same time, the developers note that the Dojo supercomputer will have high energy efficiency and small dimensions for its very extensive functions.

The currently existing Tesla FSD autopilot is still officially certified only for the second level of autonomy out of 5 possible. The improvement of the system continues. Prototypes of electric cars with the new firmware are already capable of driving with a high degree of autonomy: an on-board computer with 8 cameras (and without radars) copes with automatic control of the car on unloaded roads. But in order to certify an autopilot even at level 3, more advanced software is needed, which requires processing an ever-growing amount of data.

Tesla has not yet completed the complete assembly of the system, but Elon Musk says that Dojo will work as early as next 2022.

The Project Dojo supercomputer is Tesla's first attempt at building its own supercomputer. It is possible that the creation and development process will use innovative opportunities to modernize the system in order to improve the performance and operation of electric vehicle components. In the future, the next versions of the supercomputer from Tesla are expected.
