The project combines Metso Circored™'s hydrogen fluidized bed direct reduction technology, which uses 100 percent green hydrogen, and Electric Direct Iron Reduction Furnace (DRI) technology, which replaces the traditional blast furnace route. This route is expected to become a pioneer in the field of low-emission steel production.
Together, these technologies aim to produce environmentally friendly, high-purity metal using renewable electricity and hydrogen, eliminating the need for fossil reducing agents.
Demo installation built for scaling
Initially, the Christmas Creek green metal plant will produce more than 1,500 tons per year, serving as a platform for future industrial development. Fortescue is already conducting research to determine the optimal configuration and scale for the larger facilities that may follow. The installation is steadily moving forward, and in September 2025, the foundations were laid and the first Metso equipment was installed.
Circored™ technology is specifically designed to use fine iron ores without pelletizing, which is a major advantage for Pilbara ore streams. It produces highly metallized DRI, suitable as a direct feed for electric
