SSAB Upgrades Superheating Furnaces with Fives Technology

French engineering company Fives Group has been commissioned by Swedish steel company SSAB to replace its outdated control systems, increase process automation, and implement advanced data-based monitoring tools in its heating furnaces at the Raahe plant in Finland.

Transition to an improved management system of the 2nd level

According to Fives, the modernization project is focused on the implementation of the latest generation Level 2 control system, which includes an advanced thermal optimizer. This digital solution provides precise automated control of the furnace environment, reducing manual intervention and ensuring high performance in all operating conditions.

Deployment of intelligent monitoring to obtain real-time analytical information

To increase the transparency of the production process, Fives also integrates intelligent monitoring, a data analysis platform that consolidates operational information from the thermal optimizer. With intuitive dashboards, Smart Monitoring will provide real-time performance metrics, support proactive quality control, detect anomalies early, and predict maintenance needs. By digitizing furnace monitoring, Fives aims to improve both performance stability and equipment reliability.

Fives plans to carry out the entire modernization process within twelve months without stopping production.
