Australian mining company Rio Tinto announced that it has suspended operations at its Simandou iron ore project in Guinea following a fatal incident involving a contract worker.
The company confirmed that the worker died on February 14, 2026 at the Simandou site. Emergency response procedures were immediately activated and the appropriate authorities were notified. Work in the affected area has been suspended while investigations are carried out.
Rio Tinto stressed that safety remains its top priority and that all necessary checks will be carried out before work resumes. Further updates are expected once studies are completed.
At full operating capacity, Simandou's two mining hubs are designed to handle up to 120 million tonnes of high-quality iron ore per year.
