According to local media reports, Oman-based steel producer Jindal Steel Oman, a subsidiary of India's Jindal Steel Group, plans to increase its combined production capacity of 10 million tons per year in Oman as part of a long-term strategy aligned with the country's industrial development agenda.

Jindal Steel Oman aims for a capacity of 10 million tons
According to Mr. Shetty, the group plans to increase its steel production capacity in Oman to 10 million tons in order to strengthen the domestic steel ecosystem and increase its contribution to both total and non-oil GDP. Shetty said the company aims to increase the use of steel in the domestic market to at least 25 percent of total production by 2035. This strategy is supported by investments in processing industries and workforce development initiatives.
He noted that demand for low-carbon steel is growing from automakers, home appliance manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, and wind energy companies. In addition, the upcoming carbon trading regulations in key export markets are expected to further support demand. In particular, the Carbon Limit Control Mechanism (CBAM), which will enter into force on January 1, 2026, is expected to stimulate the market for environmentally friendly steel products.
Existing facilities in Sohar
Jindal Steel Oman operates four business units in the country. Its flagship division, Jindal Steel Sohar (formerly Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel), is described as the largest privately held integrated steel producer in the Persian Gulf region.
The company includes:
- DRI gas plant with a capacity of 2 million tons
- a 2.4 million ton smelter with modern electric arc furnaces and a ladle. furnaces
- rebar production plant with a capacity of 1.4 million tons
In 2023, the group expanded its presence through the acquisition of Sohar Steel, adding 700,000 tons of long products production capacity.
The Green Steel complex in Dukma
According to local media reports quoted by Jindal, Steel Oman CEO Jindal Steel Dukm (Vulcan Green Steel) is developing an environmentally friendly steel complex with a capacity of 5 million tons in the Dukm Special Economic Zone.
The project consists of two stages. The first stage is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2027. Shetty said that large orders for equipment have already been placed, and construction work is continuing at the facility.
