Last December, Japan's domestic consumption of steel products was 3.77 million metric tons, up 4.9 percent from the previous month and up 1.7 percent year on year, according to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Association (JISF). Meanwhile, the country's domestic steel consumption fell 0.8 percent year-on-year to 43 million metric tons in 2025.
In the same year, consumption of steel products in the construction sector in Japan fell 2.5 percent to 8.11 million metric tons, while consumption of steel products in the Japanese automobile sector was 11.07 million metric tons, up 2.8 percent year on year. In 2025, Japan's shipbuilding industry consumed 2.83 million metric tons of steel products, down two percent from 2024.
