Uğur Dalbeler, vice chairman and candidate for the position of the new chairman of the Turkish Steel Exporters Association (ÇİB), since the term of Adnan Aslan, the chairman of ÇİB, will end at the general assembly to be held in April this year, shared developments regarding the current activities of the association and upcoming projects in an interview with the Turkish newspaper Ekonomi. Mr. Dalbeler said that negotiations on new EU quota regulation, renewal of the Customs Union and related agreements, creation of strong legal protection mechanisms against anti-dumping and safeguard measures gaining momentum in Eastern Europe, Africa and alternative markets, as well as solutions aimed at reducing costs, are among the key priorities in the roadmap for the new term of ÇİB.
The most important issue of the new term is - protectionism
Saying that the most important item on the new term's agenda is a shift in global trade dynamics, Mr. Dalbeler noted that growing protectionist measures, especially in Western markets, are challenging the sector.
Noting that Turkey's export geography has changed significantly over the past 20 years and that some regions where Turkey was once strong have now emerged as competitive manufacturing hubs, Dalbeler said exports that were once largely directed to Southeast Asia and the Far East in the 1990s have been replaced by strong competitors, while North African countries have become more self-sufficient
