US Steel stated that this is the first Mon Valley Works project to receive regulatory approval since the partnership with Nippon Steel was closed. Site preparation is expected to begin immediately, and construction will begin this summer, according to the company's announcement.
The manufacturer plans to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50 percent
US Steel indicated that the slag processing project is expected to reduce emissions from slag processing operations, in some cases by 50 percent per year compared to existing processing methods. The recirculator will collect the slag generated during blast furnace steel production and cool it in a closed system. According to US Steel, this approach will eliminate the need to store slag in open pits, thereby reducing associated emissions.
The company also stressed that the project will contribute to the new life of steelmaking by-products, in particular slag, which is widely used as a key ingredient in cement production.
