Global steel production in January this year fell 6.5 percent year-on-year to 147.3 million tons, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
In January, steel production in Asia was 107.6 million tons, down 8.6 percent, with production in China at 75.3 million tons, down 13.9 percent, producing 6.8 million tons. Japan, down 0.5 percent, 15.1 million tons produced by India, up 10.5 percent, and 5.6 million tons produced by South Korea, up five percent - with all year-on-year comparisons.
The EU-27 produced 10.3 million tons of crude steel in January, down 2.3 percent from last year. Turkey's production this month was 3.4 million tons, up 5.8 percent year-on-year. Germany produced 3.1 million tons of crude steel in January, up 15 percent from the same month the previous year.
The CIS recorded steel production of 6.5 million tons, down 8.5 percent year-on-year, with Russia estimated at 5.5 million tons, down 7.4 percent from last year.
In North America, In January, steel production was 9.2 million tons, down 0.6 percent, while the US produced 7.1 million tons, up 3.3 percent in both cases year-on-year. South America's crude steel production in January was 3.4 million tons, down 1.2 percent year-on-year, while Brazil produced 2.7 million tons, down 1.4 percent year-on-year.
Africa produced 2 million tons of crude steel in the month, up 5.8 percent year-on-year. In the Middle East, steel production was 4.8 million tons, up 12.6 percent year-on-year.
