"A broader and more pragmatic discussion is finally opening up in Europe on some of the key instruments of the energy transition and their impact on industry. Among them, of course, is the ETS system, which over time has gradually turned, in addition to being a decarbonization mechanism, into a real carbon tax, subject to the dynamics of financial markets, " Gozzi said.
According to the president of Federacciai, at a stage marked by strong international uncertainty and still elevated energy prices for European companies, it is necessary to carefully assess the impact of ETS on electricity costs, especially in countries such as Italy, where electricity prices are highly dependent on gas costs. In this context, the temporary suspension of the ETS could, in his opinion, help reduce electricity prices by "about €25/MWh" before a structural review of the mechanism at the European level.
