The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Trade has proposed a new plan for protective duties on imports of blanks of any origin, as understood by SteelOrbis.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, Egypt imposed a preliminary protective duty of 16.2% on imports of billets with a minimum amount of 4,613 Egyptian pounds per ton (87.5 US dollars per ton), valid for 200 days starting on September 14. 2025.
According to sources, the Egyptian authorities are proposing a new protection scheme, according to which imports of billets under the 7207 code will be subject to reduced duties over the next three years. Duties will start at 13 percent ad valorem of the value of CIF imports, then decrease to 12 percent and 11 percent over the next two years, respectively, while the minimum specific duties will be 3,412 Egyptian pounds per ton (64.7 US dollars per ton), 3,120 Egyptian pounds per ton (59.1 US dollars per ton ton) and 2,860 Egyptian pounds per ton. ($54.2/mt).
The new plan also includes an annual tariff-free quota of 176,000 mt, sources told SteelOrbis. The expiration date and distribution methods of this measure have not been described in detail at the time of writing.
The Egyptian authorities will wait for comments for seven days before announcing their final decision.
