Russian metallurgical plant Severstal announced the start of cold commissioning of pelletizing equipment at its Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK). The commissioning phase is a key stage in preparing the new production complex for full-scale operation, with hot commissioning scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.
The project aims to transform raw material processing and reduce emissions
According to Severstal, the new pellet complex will significantly change the technological process of iron ore processing and pig iron production at the site. By supplying blast furnaces with pellets from its own production, the company expects to reduce coke consumption and increase operating efficiency.
At the same time, the project will allow the elimination of several existing sintering machines, which are currently associated with a higher environmental impact.
Major investments in support of environmental goals
CEO of Severstal PJSC Alexander Shevelev said that the construction of the facility will cost 116 billion RUB ($1.41 billion) has been ongoing for over a year, and the project will enter its peak construction phase in 2025.
