Indian state-owned mine Coal India limited (CIL) will build eight new coal mines, entailing an investment of $348 million to boost supplies to major industries including steel, the miner said in a statement on Monday, March 30.
The eight new washing machines will have a total capacity of 21.5 million tonnes and will be completed by 2029-30, it said company.
This will be in addition to two proposed coal washing plants in Odisha with a total capacity of 15 million tonnes per annum, which were announced by CIL last week.
CIL currently has 79 coal mines with a total capacity of 39.5 million tonnes per annum.
The miner will also invest an additional $3 million to upgrade existing ones washing machines to increase productivity and improve efficiency.
Separately, Coal India is refurbishing and upgrading two aging washing machines to improve throughput, recovery efficiency and process reliability. Under a public-private partnership model, the mining company is partnering with Tata Steel limted to leverage production capacity and technical expertise to increase the supply of quality coking coal to the domestic steel sector.
