Indian state-owned steel company Steel Authority of India limited (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant (BSP) has awarded a contract to Forbes Marshall limited for hydrogen injection at Blast Furnace (BF) No. 1 to reduce carbon emissions and promote green steel production, the company said in a statement on Thursday, April 9.
The statement said the hydrogen injection initiative at Bokaro Steel Plant is one of the largest in the world of blast furnace projects. It aims to partially replace traditional carbon-based fuels such as coke and coal with hydrogen, a cleaner reducing agent.
Hydrogen-based iron production produces water vapor instead of carbon dioxide, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Research and Development Center for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) will act as the main consultant, while UK company Primetals Technologies will provide technical expertise and support.
The project is expected to bring multiple benefits, such as significantly reducing carbon emissions at the plant, positioning SAIL as a leader in low-carbon steel production and boosting exports as global markets increasingly demand low-carbon steel, the statement said.
