The EU CBAM officially entered its final phase on January 1, 2026, with certification obligations set to begin in 2027 for emissions included in goods imported in 2026. Under this framework, exporters must provide independent emission data, making third-party verification a key requirement.
The new service is designed specifically for the steel sector and covers raw materials such as cast iron, ferroalloys and hot briquetted iron or direct reduction iron, as well as semi-finished products and finished steel products.
Accreditation and approval of regulatory requirements
CARES has initiated an accreditation process with a recognized national EU accreditation body to ensure compliance with CBAM.
This step is necessary in order to ensure that the verification results are accepted in the EU system.
Preparing for dual CBAM regimes
Looking ahead, CARES emphasized that the UK CBAM will enter into force on January 1, 2027.
The organization stated that it is ready to support interested parties. The transition to the EU and UK carbon boundary systems as the steel industry accelerates the transition to low-emission production.
