Steel production in India increased by 6% in April 2026, consumption increased by 8%

The Indian steel industry achieved crude steel production in April 2026 of 14.09 million tons, up 5.8 percent from last year, the Ministry of Steel said in a statement on Wednesday, May 6, citing preliminary government data.

According to the statement, the production of finished steel for the month is estimated at 13.05 million tons, which is 3.4 percent more than last year.

India's finished steel consumption in April 2026 was about 12.99 percent, up eight percent year-on-year, driven by demand from sectors such as infrastructure and manufacturing, the statement said.

On the global trade front, India's imports totaled 0.68 million tons during the month, while its exports totaled 0.47 million tons, up 30.8 percent and 24.9 percent year-on-year, respectively.
