German steel mill Thyssenkrupp Steel has announced the resumption of trial operations at its hot rolling mill No. 4 in Duisburg after completing extensive repairs and modernization work following a major fire last year.
The plant was forced to suspend operations after a fire in the furnace area occurred on October 24, 2025. There was significant damage to the furnaces and parts of the roof structure.
According to Thyssenkrupp Steel, repair work over the past few months has included the replacement and restoration of damaged equipment, as well as the implementation of additional technical improvements aimed at increasing operational reliability and process stability.
Modernization efforts support long-term operational Indicators
In addition to maintenance work, Thyssenkrupp Steel used the shutdown period to carry out modernization measures aimed at increasing plant availability and supporting more stable production.
The associated continuous casting line, which supplies raw materials to the hot rolling mill, already resumed operations in mid-December 2025. The final commissioning phase includes trial production and testing procedures before the plant returns to full production capacity.
Hot Rolling Mill 4 remains a key asset for the production of premium flat products
Hot Rolling Mill 4 is central to Thyssenkrupp Steel ’ Production network and broader modernization strategy. The company produces a wide range of hot-rolled flat products intended for both the standard and high-value-added market segments.
The production portfolio includes standard steel grades, as well as high-strength and thin premium steels that require tight dimensional tolerances, high surface quality and improved mechanical properties. These products are supplied to several strategically important industries, including automotive, electromobility, mechanical engineering, construction and energy.
