Global steel production decreased by 0.3 percent in May 2026

Global steel production in May this year decreased by 0.3 percent year-on-year to 157.9 million tons, according to the World Steel Manufacturers Association (worldsteel).

In the period from January to May of this year, global steel production decreased by 1.5 percent year-on-year to 773.1 million tons.

In May, steel production in Asia and Oceania totaled 116.2 million tons, a decrease of 0.9 percent, while China's output was 84.4 million tons, a decrease of 2.7 percent, while 7.0 million tons were produced by Japan, an increase of 1.7 percent, 14.1 million tons were produced by India, an increase of 1.9 percent, and 5.4 million tons were produced by South Korea, an increase of 3.3 percent year-on-year.

The EU-27 countries produced 11.4 million tons of crude steel in May, which is 0.4 percent less than last year. This month, Turkey's production amounted to 3.4 million tons, which is 8.9 percent more than last year. Germany produced 3.2 million tons of unrefined steel in May, up 7.3 percent from the same month last year.

Steel production in the CIS was 6.7 million tons, which is 4.8 percent less than last year, while the projected production volume in Russia is 5.6 million tons, which is 5.4 percent less than last year a year.

In North America, crude steel production totaled 10.1 million tons in May, an increase of 15.6 percent year-on-year, while 7.5 million tons were produced in the United States, an increase of 9.2 percent year-on-year. Crude steel production in South America totaled 3.5 million tons in May, up 3.7 percent from the same month of the previous year, while Brazil's output was 2.8 million tons, up 2.4 percent year-on-year.

Africa produced 2.1 million tons of crude steel this month, which is 10.3 percent more than last year. In the Middle East, steel production totaled 3.9 million tons, down 19.4 percent.
